On Saturday, October 4, fifty volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, wearing “Mormon Helping Hands” vests, helped the Ayuda Foundation prepare school books and other school materials for shipment to and distribution in Pohnpei.
“Mormon Helping Hands” is the name under which members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) perform voluntary community service. The group consisted of the youth, youth leaders, missionaries, members and their friends from the Barrigada Ward of the LDS Church in Guam.

The Ayuda Foundation (“Ayuda” means “help” or “assist” in the Chamorro language) was established on Guam to assist those in need by donations of medical supplies, medical equipment, school supplies, and other materials to the islands of Micronesia.
The volunteers were able to box and palletize most of the books and materials in the warehouse. They also took a truck load of trash from the warehouse to the Barrigada Ward dumpster for disposal, because there was no dumpster at the warehouse. The volunteers also took a truck load of newspapers and magazines to the recycling center. (The recycling center was going to charge for the drop-off until they saw the “Mormon Helping Hands” and LDS Church logos, and took all the materials at no charge.)
Christ like service is an essential part of the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Therefore, working hand in hand with the Ayuda Foundation was a meaningful experience for everyone involved. The group of volunteers greatly enjoyed themselves and expressed appreciation for the fruits, water and other refreshments provided by the Ayuda Foundation representatives during the day.
